Closing 2015 The entrance
road to Cosby campground has been temporarily closed due to flood damage
resulting from a flash flood on June 22, 2015. Underground electric and phone
lines were exposed along most of the road, and electric power and water
service to the campground and picnic area have been shut off. The campground, picnic area, and all roadways will remain closed
until power and water services can be restored and the repairs are complete. Trails
remain open at this time, but there is no trailhead access. Hikers are
advised to use caution throughout the area. Crews are currently assessing the
area for any damage to trails and footlogs. Roads
are closed to all pedestrian traffic in the area throughout the
closure. For updates on when Cosby entrance road will reopen, see http://www.nps.gov/grsm/ http://twitter.com/smokiesroadsnps. Repair work began on Newfound Gap Road on April 13, 2015. The
section to be resurfaced runs from Sugarlands
Visitor Center south to the Chimney’s picnic area, and work includes
replacing several drainage culverts and adding two retaining walls near the
Carlos Campbell overlook. The lower parking area will be closed for about 2
months while the work is completed. There will be no lane closures during the peak summer months,
June 15 through August 25. Night-time lane closures will occur from 8 PM to 8
AM on Sunday – Thursday from mile-marker 2 to mile-marker 6.3. Road workers
might be on the side of the road during day-time hours, so proceed with
caution through the entire work zone. After August 15, daytime lane closures will again be in effect
until September 30; all lanes will remain open Sept 30 – October 31, with
lane closures again in effect from November 1 – December 17. No work will take place during Federal holidays. |
