Favorite Web Sites

There are several excellent sites that give information about hiking in the the GRSM. Yoursmokies.com gives information on hiking, biking, horseback riding, and fishing in the Smokies, and has a store that displays many relevant books for the area. This site also gives weather updates, information on road closings, trail information, etc.

Hikinginthesmokys.com gives invaluable information on hiking in the Park, as well as listing over 70 trails with location, special features, and level of difficulty given for each trail. This site also has a "hiking and gear" store with many links to available books.

These sites also have information on rental cabins at all the gateway communities, as well as links to information on each gateway community and other nearby towns, as does a site called American Mountain rentals.

Another nice site is www.southernscenicphotography.com, showcasing scenery from predominately the southern U.S.

The All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI), a project of Discover Life in America (DLIA), seeks to inventory the estimated 100,000 species of living organisms in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As of January, 2010 DLIA's ATBI Program has resulted in the identification of 907 species new to science. Plus, in just over a decade we have coordinated the discovery of 6,582 more species previously known to exist, but not known to inhabit the Park.

If you like to bike ride, Elle Colquitt and Jon Livengood have written a book with maps and cue sheets for bicycling in the Knoxville area, as well as another for mountain bike riding in various parts of E. Tennessee.
